청초호
면적 1.38 km2. 둘레 5 km. 좁고 긴 사주(砂洲)에 의해 동해와 격리된 석호(潟湖)로 북쪽에 입구가 열려 있다. 이 호수는 선박들이 외해(外海)의 풍랑을 피할 수 있는 천연의 조건을 갖추고 있으므로, 조선시대에는 수군만호영(水軍萬戶營)을 두고 병선(兵船)을 정박시킨 일도 있다.
태백산맥의 미시령(彌矢嶺:826 m) 부근에서 흘러나오는 청초천이 동류하면서 학사평(鶴沙坪)과 소야(所野)평야를 이루고 조양동(朝陽洞)에서 청초호로 흘러든다. 잘록한 항아리 모양을 하고 있는 이 호수는 현재 속초항의 내항으로, 500 t급의 선박이 내왕할 수 있다. 북쪽에 영랑호(永郞湖)가 있고, 동남쪽에는 속초해수욕장이 있다.
